Questionable Marketing

This information is taken from the Kaiser Family Foundation:

"The rapid increase in DTC advertising for prescription drugs has focused attention on its role in drug spending and prescribing. A new study by researchers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology looks at the effect of direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising on spending for prescription drugs. The study found that, on average, a 10% increase in DTC advertising of drugs within a therapeutic drug class resulted in a 1% increase in sales of the drugs in that class.Applying this result to the 25 largest drug classes in 2000, the study found that every $1 the pharmaceutical industry spent on DTC advertising in that year yielded an additional $4.20 in drug sales. DTC advertising was responsible for 12% of the increase in prescription drugs sales, or an additional $2.6 billion, in 2000."

And speaking of (DTC) direct to consumer advertising, have you seen the commercial with Dr. Robert Jarvik? Dr Jarvik is the Lipitor spokesman who is now being investigated by Congress because he is not a doctor after all. He was unable to get into medical school, but Pfizer still chose him for their marketing campaign.

A House of Representatives letter, signed by committee chairman John Dingell and subcommittee chairman Bart Stupak states "We are concerned that Dr. Jarvik's qualifications may be misinterpreted in this advertisement campaign given that he may not be a practicing physician with a valid license in any state".

More shady business practices from Big Pharma. Only two countries allow DTC: The United States and New Zealand. Both countries need to rethink this policy. .....Matt

Real Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Instead of asking the doctor about your cholesterol and blood pressure, request a couple of tests that can really show your risk for heart disease. They are called the Crp and homocysteine level test. "C-reactive protein is a test that measures the amount of a protein in the blood that signals acute inflammation. A more sensitive CRP test, called a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) assay, is available to determine a person's risk for heart disease. Many consider a high CRP level to be a positive risk factor for heart disease. However, is not known whether CRP is merely a sign of cardiovascular disease or whether it actually plays a role in causing cardiovascular problems."

"Homocysteine is an amino acid in the blood. Too much of it is related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease (fatty deposits in peripheral arteries). Evidence suggests that homocysteine may promote atherosclerosis (fatty deposits in blood vessels) by damaging the inner lining of arteries and promoting blood clots." The American Heart Association has not yet called hyperhomocysteinemia (high homocysteine level in the blood) a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but they will. They have no choice. The research is there. The AMA's support of cholesterol medication to prevent heart disease is unfounded and amateurish.

The answer to prevent heart disease is folic acid, with a little B-6 and B-12. Get to the root of the problem. Treating symptoms doesn't solve anything. .........Matt

Food Industry Exposed

"Super Size Me" is a favorite movie of mine. It's great for people to see just how bad fast food really is. I know the McRib is back, but try to fight the urge.

Another documentary about the food industry is about to come out. It deals with chemicals in processed foods that we feed to our children, and the health problems associated with those poor nutritional choices. I have not watched it yet, but it should be a real "eye opener". Get your Christmas shopping done early this year, and order the DVD. ........Matt

Lite Minded

Did you know that New Mexico tried to ban aspartame a couple of years ago? I didn't. I don't remember the press writing anything about it. It looked like the legislation would pass, but the major manufacturer of aspartame, Anjnomoto of Japan, and powerful lobbyists of the pharmaceutical/chemical front group, the Calorie Control Council, threatened to sue the state. The state backed down, and the dangers of this deadly sweetener were buried again. A typical story about government influence and corruption, with the "spoils" going to the highest bidder. The result: big profits and a sickened nation.

I've never heard of the Calorie Control Council. It's a fancy, meaningless name for an organization that misleads the public about chemicals, food additives, and artificial sweeteners, paid for by the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. The council generates huge profits while the public suffers.

Interesting reading you care to investigate.

Don't forget to check out the CCC site. Read how aspartame is safe for use in pregnancy(birth defects), and adored by children(brain damage). Gather the family and sit down for a good laugh.

This just in...Hawaii will try to ban aspartame. Will they be the first? Or, will they crumble like a piece of gluten-free bread. (that's actually pretty funny if you know anything about Celiac Disease)......Matt

Etherium Gold

I'm just starting to learn about a new product called "Etherium Gold" by HarmonicInnerprizes. Basically, this supplement balances brain wave activity and increases alpha production. It is for people who want to reach a higher level of consciousness and spiritual transformation.

"Neuroscientists believe that to the greater degree we can consciously tap the alpha wave in our awakened state is to the greater degree we are creative, have greater mind-body motor coordination, the higher our IQ tends to be, and the less stressed-out we are."

Balancing the left/right hemispheres of the brain (alpha and beta brain waves) can help a person become calm, focused, and energized.

Studies are underway for the treatment of ADD, ADHD, and autism. "Many behavioral dysfunctions and learning difficulties are caused by excessive beta wave production and the left/right hemisphere imbalances."

Here are a couple of testimonials I picked out...

I wanted to let you know that my 11 year old that has ADHD is doing really well. It is absolutely amazing at how well the Etherium Gold capsules are working. I think she has been taking them for 6 days now. She was able to clean her bedroom in about 45 minutes with very little direction. Prior to her taking the Etherium Gold; cleaning her room was a monumental task!

Since taking these products I am experiencing a dramatic increase in vitality, creativity, groundedness, and peace. I feel like my body, mind, and spirit are in sync, working harmoniously together. I am enveloped in a constant state of soft, nurturing energy and easily connect with others from a space of love and compassion. I have a vastly increased spiritual awareness while still being well-grounded. My self-confidence and gentleness towards self has also greatly improved. My body feels strong and centered.

Whether it's autism, or a higher state of mind, "Etherium Gold" could be your answer. I've never tried it, and I don't know anybody else who has, but I'm seriously thinking about it. Go to http://www.harmonicinnerprizes.com/ and read about it yourself. ..........Matt

Looks Just Like the Real Thing

At least two companies are not listening to the FDA about the safety of cloned meat. Well, that's what they are saying right now. Things may change in the future as cloning becomes cheaper. Our family drinks 2-3 gallons per week of Horizon Organic milk.(I hate knowing that I'm giving my money to Dean Foods) Refuse to buy products from companies that do not distance themselves from cloning. The FDA already said that labels are not necessary, so buy wisely.

(AP) Milk from cloned cows is not welcome at the nation's biggest milk company.
Although the government has approved meat and milk from cloned animals while it conducts further studies, Dean Foods Co. of Dallas said that its customers and consumers don't want milk from cloned animals. The $10 billion company owns Land O'Lakes and Horizon Organic, among dozens of other brands.

"Numerous surveys have shown that Americans are not interested in buying dairy products that contain milk from cloned cows and Dean Foods is responding to the needs of our consumers," the company said in a statement.

Federal scientists say there is virtually no difference between clones and conventional cows, pigs or goats. The Food and Drug Administration in December gave preliminary approval to meat and milk from cloned animals and could grant final approval by year's end.
The government has asked producers to voluntarily keep clones away from the food supply until final approval is granted.

Smaller companies such as Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream and Organic Valley previously have said they oppose milk from clones.
Milk companies worry that concern over cloning could turn people away from dairy products. So far, public opinion appears mixed.
A September poll by the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology found that 64 percent of respondents were uncomfortable with animal cloning. A December poll by the University of Maryland found that the same percentage would buy, or consider buying, such food if the government said it was safe.

Dean Foods spokeswoman Marguerite Copel said the company respects the FDA, "but we've got a customer and consumer base."
The company did not say whether it would use milk from the offspring of cloned animals. Cloning companies say the purpose of cloning is not to put many cloned livestock into the food supply. Instead, the goal is to make a genetic copy of a superior animal and then put its offspring into the food supply.

Smithfield Foods, Inc. Statement Regarding Animal Cloning

SMITHFIELD, Va., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In response to the
Federal Drug Administration's announcement today that meat products from
cloned animals are safe for human consumption, Smithfield Foods, Inc.
(NYSE: SFD) reiterated earlier statements that the company is not planning
to produce meat products from cloned animals. The science involved in
cloning animals is relatively new. As thoughtful leaders in our industry,
we will continue to monitor further scientific research on this technology.

Throughout our long history we have been very diligent and measured in
making decisions that affect our customers and our reputation. We are
committed to maintaining our focus on the development and improvement of
our meat products through careful selective breeding and genetic research.
With sales of $12 billion, Smithfield is the leading processor and
marketer of fresh pork and processed meats in the United States, as well as
the largest producer of hogs.

SambuActin

Be prepared, this is a long post.

Since it's still the cold and flu season, I'll tell you a little story about our battle with the cold virus recently. Our first daughter became ill on Christmas. She soon gave it to her sister about four days later. Both had severe nasal problems, a cough and dual ear infections. We were forced to take them to the pediatrician, and antibiotics were recommended.

My wife and I started taking the usual oregano oil, andrographis paniculata, and olive leaf. She's not as dedicated as I am about taking supplements, and she paid for her mistake. A week later, she was sick. We managed to stop it in her nose, and she felt much better three days later. Then, she caught the virus a second time ....this time in her eye. It quickly spread to her chest, and a visit to the doctor was required.

Now, I had three very sick people in my house. I was determined to beat the virus, but it wasn't going to be easy. I found out just how strong this virus was a few days later. On January 4th, I felt the annoying scratch in the back of my throat. My supplements had failed. I had the beginning stage of a cold that replicates quickly. Luckily, I was at work at the time, so I searched for one more supplement that might work.

I decided to buy a product by Solaray called "SambuActin." It is an elderberry extract in lozenge form, and a copy of the very popular supplement, Sambucol. Elderberry is well known as a strong antiviral. Within 15 minutes, I felt fine. My scratchy, sore throat disappeared. I couldn't believe it. I've used elderberry before in a complex, but it didn't work. My wife took it after she was sick, but there was no noticeable improvement. This time, it was successful in the correct dose, as long as you take it immediately.

All medicine and supplements have a therapeutic dose. A complex usually has around 200mg of elderberry extract or less. The two lozenges in SambuActin contain 400mg of extract and some vitamin C. Apparently, that was the amount I required. For the next six nights, the virus attacked. I would feel fine throughout the day until about 10pm each night. The scratchy, sore throat would start, and I'd stop it with a couple of lozenges. About 1:00am each night, a burning chest and sore throat forced me to take two more. I repeated this at 4:00am, and again at 7:00am. All symptoms would disappear before I'd fall back to sleep.

Every night for a week, I repeated this process with the same results. I could tell that if I stopped taking the elderberry lozenges, I would have been very, very sick. The only symptom I had each day was the deep, "sick voice." I sounded sick, but I wasn't. I still can't believe how effective it was. The virus didn't go down easy, but I won. Basically, I think you have about a 2-3 hour window to stop a cold, so I played around with the virus on the 4th day. I'd stop taking the lozenges until I started coughing. A few minutes later, It would stop with the normal dosage....truly amazing.

At this point, as long as I have access to this product, I believe that there is no cold or flu virus that can win. We'll see. There are many sick people out there, and we have 10 more weeks of miserable weather. I suggest you get some and see for yourself. ............Matt

The Sweet Disease

Why do so many people get sick around the holidays? Well, one of the major factors is the amount of sugar you consume. Cookies, cakes, and pie, oh my. You're probably better off smoking cigarettes...the non-filters. At least, you'd be a little skinnier. No, don't smoke cigarettes, it's horrible advice.

Sugar causes all kinds of problems. If you want to pay for the $60 billion we need to overhaul the health care system, then tax sugar. Tax candy, tax gum, tax soda, tax all those nasty cream filled cakes, dripping with preservatives that our plump population can't live without. A Snickers bar should cost as much as a pack of cigarettes. That tub of ice cream you polished off last night should have set you back $20.

Sugar causes disease. It's a fact. Stop eating it and you'll be much healthier.(and you'll look better) ........Matt

In the book "Get The Sugar Out" by Ann Louise Gittleman M.S. C.N.S Ms. Gittleman says, "No matter what form it takes, sugar paralyzes the immune system in a variety of ways:

Sugar has been proven to destroy the germ-killing ability of white blood cells for up to five hours after ingestion.
It reduces the production of antibodies, proteins that combine with and inactivate foreign invaders in the body.
It interferes with the transport of vitamin C, one of the most important nutrients for all facets of immune function.
It causes mineral imbalances and sometimes allergic reactions, both of which weaken the immune system.
It neutralizes the action of essential fatty acids, thus making cells more permeable to invasion by allergens and microorganisms."

Tamanu Oil

Oil of Tamanu
by: Chris Kilham

The exotic isles of the South Pacific are home to a long-used traditional ingredient which is just now working its way into the US and European topical and cosmetic industries. Since the 1920’s Oil of Tamanu (Calophyllum inophyllum) has been studied in hospitals and by researchers in Europe, Asia and the Pacific islands. The results of this research are impressive. In 1999 and 2000, I travelled to the South Pacific to study the tamanu tree, and the processing of its oil, and delved into its science in earnest. This is what I learned.

Tamanu’s Healing Powers

Tamanu oil possesses a unique capacity to promote the formation of new tissue, thereby accelerating wound healing and the growth of healthy skin. This process is known as cicatrization. For this reason, it is a widely used traditional topical aid. In Pacific island folk medicine, tamanu oil is applied liberally to cuts, scrapes, burns, insect bites and stings, abrasions, acne and acne scars, psoriasis, diabetic sores, anal fissures, sunburn, dry or scaly skin, blisters, eczema, herpes sores, and to reduce foot and body odor. Tamanu oil is also massaged into the skin to relieve neuralgia, rheumatism and sciatica. Tamanu oil is employed by Polynesian women for promoting healthy, clear, blemish-free skin, and is also used on babies to prevent diaper rash and skin eruptions.

I have used tamanu many times...it's amazing stuff. We even used it on our twins (diaper rash, dry skin) and it healed the skin faster than anything else we tried. .......Matt

FDA: Unparalleled Incompetence

Just when you think the FDA couldn't get any stoopider, they go and do something like this. You have probably already heard that the FDA considers cloned meat and dairy products from cows, pigs, and goats, safe to eat. (even though nobody has eaten it before) The frankenstink food should hit the market in the first quarter of 2008, but you won't know that you're even eating it. According to the FDA, there will be no labeling requirements for cloned products.

The FDA's draft risk assessment on cloned food finds that meat and milk from clones of adult cattle, pigs and goats, and their offspring, are as safe to eat as food from conventionally bred animals. A group of independent scientific experts in cloning and animal health, most likely from biotechnology companies that stand to make huge profits, concluded that the FDA made the right decision in their evaluations and conclusions.

Biotechnology companies see cloning as a giant opportunity to mass-produce meat- and milk-giving animals, and I'm sure the FDA is ready to buy some stock. I read that the draft risk assessment was "shelved" for years because some huge dairy companies were concerned that the public viewed cloned animals as disgusting, which would hurt future profits. They're correct. About 90% of people surveyed would avoid cloned food and almost everybody wants it labeled.

Tell that to the FDA. Oops, you can't. Comments from consumers concerned with commercial cloning had to be sent to the FDA by May 2007. As I said before, the meat is safe, so safe that it doesn't need to be labeled...but if it was labeled, nobody would buy it...that's why it shouldn't be labeled. Sounds misleading...

Consumers will be unable to choose whether or not to buy cloned food, and government food safety agencies, if they really do exist, will be unable to document any long-term health implications caused by cloned food. (which is exactly what the biotech companies want)

The FDA scientists concluded that there was "no basis for flagging the meat and milk products or for treating them differently than other food products. The US food safety system is designed to screen meat and milk for hazards, regardless of the means by which the animals were derived," they wrote. There is no science-based reason to apply additional safeguards."

Does the FDA mention any health risks for clones and their offspring? They sure do. Here is their summary of the draft assessment findings revealed in the December 28, 2006 document Animal Cloning: Proposed Risk Management Plan for Clones and their Progeny (Docket No. 2003N-0572) they report:

"Surrogate dams bearing cattle and sheep clones show an increased frequency of adverse outcomes compared to dams bearing non-clone pregnancies. This increase is not seen in swine and goat surrogate dams bearing clone pregnancies. Early reports of cloning in cattle and sheep indicated that most clone pregnancies failed to result in live births. As the technology improves, however, the proportion of live, normal births appears to be increasing. Animal cloning, particularly in cattle and sheep, is associated with an increased risk of adverse health outcomes in the surrogate dams carrying late-term clone fetuses, as well as very young clones. Specific health issues of concern for the surrogate dams include the increased incidence of prenatal hydroallantois and/or hydrops in the surrogate dams carrying clone pregnancies to term. Health issues of concern for the clones themselves include perinatal symptoms related to LOS [large offspring syndrome] including, but not limited to, pulmonary and/or renal insufficiency, difficulty maintaining body temperature, and umbilical hernias."

"Increased risks of adverse health outcomes have been observed in surrogate dams and very young clones. Working with professional societies dedicated to animal health and the care of food-producing animals, such as those associated with veterinary medicine or the practice of embryo transfer, FDA will encourage the development of standards of care for animals involved in the cloning process (i.e., clones and their surrogate dams)." Think about it...the FDA in charge of animal care? I wouldn't let them take care of the two rabid squirrels fighting over a piece of corn outside my back door.

"The scientific community's understanding of the epigenetic processes involved in early embryonic development is still imperfect, however, knowledge about the molecular mechanisms involved is growing. There currently appears to be general agreement that epigenetic dysregulation is responsible for the anomalies observed in clones. The exact mechanism(s) by which dysregulation occurs (or correct regulation persists) is not yet well understood. Because of this biological uncertainty, we will carefully monitor this expanding field to ensure that the positions commonly held on epigenetic mechanisms, especially as they apply to clones, will continue to be supported."

I feel a lot safer now. Can you imagine sinking your teeth into a biological uncertainty?

Here is some information on a tea that was recently sent to me. Switch out that old, green tea and try something new.
Dr. Miller's Holy Tea - formulated by Dr. Bill Miller (Ph.D. Nutritional Science) of Tennessee, USA - is a unique herbal blend of safe, all-natural ingredients designed to gently cleanse the digestive tract and detoxify the body.

The Holy Tea ingredients are a special blend of high-quality, pesticide-free, safe, natural, edible herbs. Here is the list of Holy Tea herbs:Holy Thistle, Persimmon leaves, Malva leaves, Marsh Mallow leaves, and Blessed Thistle.

It is the special enzymes that allow the gentle cleansing of the whole body with continued use. We don't carry Holy Tea, but maybe we will in the future. HPV Vaccine Has Deadly Reputation

Did anybody catch that journalistic piece of trash about the HPV "vaccine" published in the Journal Star yesterday? The article written by AP medical writer, Mike Stobbe, reports that Gardasil's shot has a painful reputation. Apparently, Merck's Gardasil vaccine is more painful than normal injections and may cause fainting. Mr. Stubb was too busy praising this "groundbreaking" cure to actually report the truth behind this deadly and unproven vaccine. Sure the shot hurts, but girls get nervous and faint. At least, that's what the safety specialist from the CDC wants you to believe.

Stubb and Merck want the public to believe that the only side effect of the injection is a sore arm. He failed to report how dangerous the vaccine really is. There have been 11 deaths associated with Gardasil. Over 3,400 serious reactions like Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Bell's Palsy, and paralysis, have been linked to this drug. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is overloading and most parents think Gardasil is safe. Well, if Merck, doctors, the CDC, the FDA, and Mike Stubb tell you it's safe, then it must be true.

Unlike the Journal Star, I did a little research about Stubby and the cervical cancer vaccination hoax. He recently wrote a story about how cholesterol lowering pills have lowered the nation's average cholesterol from 222-199 in the last 50 years. Twenty points in 50 years. That's front page stuff. He sucked up to Big Pharma a little more with, and I quote...

"While Americans have gotten much heavier since then (1960), they've been able to lower their cholesterol with powerful drugs that carry few if any side effects." Sound familiar? He should tell that to all the customers who come in each week to buy a statin alternative that's actually works because they can't take the side effects any longer.

The story is a complete joke. Journal Star, what are you thinking? Next time, try publishing an article that has some merit. ........................Matt

Mount Hagen for gourmet organic coffee lovers

If you like coffee, I heartily recommend two items I bought today at Naturally Yours.

First is Mount Hagen Organic-Cafe highland freeze-dried instant coffee.

I was watching an episode of Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe, last night, and it was about tending an organic coffee plantation. This made me want to try some organic coffee.

I should point out that I normally drink Kava brand instant coffee, 90% acid reduced, due to a close encounter with incipient acid reflux. Since I've been drinking soy milk and Kava, instead of regular coffee, I have no heartburn anymore.

Anyway, this organic coffee tastes rich and mild. It really is the equal of Starbucks, or better. I think I like it even better actually, though I've only had one cup today. The taste was so amazing, I burst out in praises of it to my wife at lunch.

Second is: Tree of Life Avocado honey to sweeten it. As others have noted on the internet, this honey has a buttery taste that will blow the mind of your tastebuds! I also like orange blossom honey.

Combine Mount Hagen Organic Cafe coffee (caffeinated or decaf) with Tree of Life Avocado honey, perhaps some soy or dairy milk, and you'll have a delightful cup of wake up.

Both fine products are available at Naturally Yours.

Healthy New Year

Happy New Year. I thought you might like to know which products I think will make a big impact in the natural supplement industry for 2008. Here are my top four.

1.) Ave' (Avemar) - Ave' is made from wheat germ fermented by bakers yeast. It contains supplemental quantities of the naturally occurring compound, Methoxy-Substituted Benzoquinones (DMBQ), which helps regulate the process of cellular metabolism and support mechanisms of immune system regulation. This supplement....

Supports cell metabolic regulation
Promotes immune system modulation
Maintains healthy cellular & humoral (Th1/Th2) immune balance
Promotes optimal NK cell targeting ability and the coordinated response of macrophages, B-cells and T-Cells.

Ave' looks to be like another great immune system enhancer. For $160 a month, it better be.

2.) FlexNow - FlexNow Joint Formula is a new approach to joint pain. The active ingredient in FlexNow is derived from the shea “nut,” the pit of the fruit of the Karite tree, which grows wild in Africa. Shea nut contains triterpenes which are powerful inflammation fighters used for stiffness and mobility issues. With a money back guarantee and many positive comments, I expect FlexNow to be very popular this year.

3.) Curamin - Curamin enhances the body's natural defense mechanisms for the relief of inflammation and pain due to overuse. This complex has...

Curcumin
Curcuminoids
Dl Phenylananine
Boswellia
Nattokinase

Another excellent pain product. Results are expected in about 45 minutes.

4.) Stem Enhance - StemEnhance is a breakthrough, natural botanical extract that supports wellness by helping your body maintain healthy stem cell physiology. It is the first product on the market from the latest phytoceutical product category called “stem cell enhancers.” The ingredients help to support the release of stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. Through a natural process, those stem cells then travel to areas of the body where they are most needed.

The benefits from Stem Enhance come from aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA) found in blue green algae. This product can also boost your NK (natural killer) cells. Right now, you can only get this supplement from independent sellers through a multi-level marketing campaign. Don't let that discourage you. Noni juice started the same way.

Please post your experience if you're tried any of these. ...........Matt
